Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining lukewarm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it froth for about 10 minutes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine sifted flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add butter, eggs, and the frothy yeast mixture. Knead until smooth.
  3. Allow the dough to rise covered for about an hour until it doubles in size.
  4. Prepare the almond-honey topping by melting butter and mixing in sugar, honey, and sliced almonds; let cool slightly.
  5. Transfer risen dough to a greased baking pan, spread almond mix on top, and let rise again for 20 minutes.
  6. Bake at 350°F for 25–30 minutes until golden brown. Cool completely before slicing.
  7. For the custard filling: heat milk and whisk egg yolks with sugar and cornstarch; combine both mixtures and cook until thickened.
  8. Cut the cooled cake into two layers; spread custard on the bottom layer and replace the top layer.
